Roma Chaos A.D.: Exploring Modern Rome Through Photography
Inspired by Japanese photography of the 1960s & 1970s, from Araki’s Tokyo to Kitajima’s explorations, this project blends intimate and public spaces. It draws parallels between Rome’s historical centre, increasingly transformed into a boutique for disposable tourism, and its periphery, progressively left to its own devices. This becomes an exploration of the relationship between the ‘New Romans’ - recent Bangladeshi, Nigerian, Kurdish & Syrian immigrants amongst many - and the native Roman population. This relationship generates social conflict and xenophobic backlash, igniting the resurgence of right-wing movements.
